Detectives Check on Unresponsive Driver, Recover Stolen Firearm

New Castle County Police have arrested Alonzo Roberts, 35, for firearm related offenses following reports of a suspicious vehicle in the community of Sparrow Run.

(Newark, Del. – 19702) On Sunday (November 6) at about 6:30a.m., County Detectives were in the area of Sparrow Run investigating a shooting when they were alerted by multiple people of a suspicious vehicle.  Witnesses reported that a Ford Explorer was stopped in the roadway at the intersection of Pulaski Highway and Brookmont Dr and the driver was unresponsive.

Detectives unsuccessfully attempted to get a response from the driver and sole occupant, Alonzo Roberts.  Noting that the vehicle was still in drive, detectives broke out the passenger’s side window and were able to place the vehicle in park.

Alonzo Roberts woke up and shifted his body allowing detectives to see that he was in possession of an extended handgun magazine.  Detectives attempted to take Alonzo Roberts into custody at which time he began to fight with them, causing one of the detectives to sustain an injury.  Alonzo Roberts was eventually taken into custody and found to be in possession of a handgun, an additional extended handgun magazine, and prescription pills.

Police learned through the investigation that the handgun was stolen.

Detectives said there is no evidence to believe this incident is related to the shooting investigation.

The injured detective was treated at an area hospital and released.
