(Wilmington, DE 19808) Earlier today (August 2nd) Officers from the New Castle County Division of Police responded to Greenbank Park in reference to the theft of a historical marker in memory of The Lynching of George White.

Yesterday, (August 1st) a concerned citizen noticed that the sign was missing and that there was a large hole in the ground where it once stood.

Detectives from the New Castle County Division of Police Criminal Investigations Unit assumed the investigation.

This historical marker was supplied by the State Historical and Cultural Affairs, Division of Public Archives. The blue cast aluminum sign was posted in the park on June 19th, 2019, and a dedication was held on June 23rd, 2019.

“The alleged theft of the lynching memorial marker at Greenbank Park will only bring renewed attention to the horror and injustice that occurred right here in New Castle County,” County Executive Matt Meyer said.  “I call on whoever is responsible for this crime to do the right thing and return the marker to us.”
