The New Castle County Division of Police sadly mourns the passing of Tonka, a retired Mounted Patrol horse.

Tonka, a Percheron horse, was born on April 10, 1997. Before joining NCCPD, he spent his early years pulling plows in the fields until the age of five. In 2004, Tonka proudly joined the New Castle County Mounted Patrol Unit. He stood an impressive 17.2 hands tall, weighed 2,000 pounds, and was known for his striking jet-black coat.

In 2005, just a year after joining the unit, Tonka earned first place in the uniformed competition at the North American Police Equitation Competition (NAPEC), surpassing more than 100 competitors. During that same event in Virginia Beach, Tonka and his rider, now-retired NCCPD Officer Cpl. Jeffrey Hill, were captured in a photograph, an image that still serves as the official logo on the NAPEC website today. Tonka returned to NAPEC in 2012 and once again took first place in the uniformed division, solidifying his legacy as one of the most accomplished police horses in the nation.

After retiring from the Mounted Unit in July 2018, Tonka remained at Carousel Park, where he continued to make a difference as part of the Carousel Park & Equestrian Center’s lesson program. He helped students of all ages gain confidence and discover the joy of riding. With his gentle nature, kind spirit, and steady presence, Tonka quickly became a favorite among all who met him.

On Monday, July 21, 2025, Tonka passed away peacefully at the age of 28. He served our community with honor and heart, and his legacy will live on in the memories of all who knew and loved him.
