The Lieutenant Joseph L. Szczerba Police Academy is located in the community of Kimberton, just outside of Newark. The 14,000-square-foot facility replaced an abandoned swimming pool that was located within an area which had experienced a high level of crime. Dedicated in 2000, this modern building provides a venue for the instruction of new recruits.
The academy is approximately 30 weeks.
Daytime hours, Monday-Friday (non-residential) with weekends off.
Daily activities include uniform inspection, classroom instruction and physical training.
Training
Training at the academy is both extensive and intensive, involving instruction in a variety of different areas including:
- State and local laws
- Police procedures and protocols
- Firearms and the use of force
- Community relations
- Specialized driver education
- Interpersonal relationships
