(New Castle, De 19720) Yesterday (July 11), at approximately 12:25 p.m. patrol officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to Sixth Street in the community of Mayview Manor for a report of a stabbing.  Upon arrival the 33-year-old male victim, Matthew Hessey was located on the front step area of the residence suffering from an apparent stab wound to the torso.

 Matthew was transported to a local area hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after. 

Detectives from the New Castle County Division of Police Criminal Investigations Unit arrived at the scene and assumed the investigation.  The detectives were able to develop a 17-year-old male as a suspect.  The juvenile is the boyfriend of Matthew’s girlfriend’s daughter. 

Detectives from the Special Investigations Unit were able to locate the suspect at his residence and take him into custody without incident. 

The juvenile was transported to police headquarters where he was charged with one count of felony Murder First Degree, one count of felony Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, and one count of felony Possession of Ammunition by a Person Prohibited.  He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and held in lieu of $1 million dollars cash bail.

“My thoughts are with the family during this tragic and very difficult time.” stated Colonel Joseph Bloch, Chief of Police, “I would also like to commend our Criminal Investigation Unit for gathering enough evidence to take the suspect into custody so quickly, bringing some sense of closure to the family.”

The New Castle County Police Department is searching for 13-year-old Corey Brown.

(Newark, DE 19702) On July 2022, patrol officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to the unit block of Sandburg Place, in the community of Christiana Reserve for a report of a missing person.

When the officers arrived, they learned that 13-year-old Corey Brown had left the residence on foot and has a medical condition that caused a concern for his welfare.

Corey is a black male, 5’ 9”, 130lbs. with brown eyes and black hair in a flat top style cut.   He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black sweatpants, and black sneakers. (New Castle, DE 19720) Recently, officers from the New Castle County Division of Police have been made aware of a phone scam in which the caller pretended to be Lieutenant Faulkner from the New Castle County Sheriff’s Office.  In this case, the victim was told that she owed money on citations received for missing a court date she was subpoenaed for. The subject(s) told her if she did not pay, she would be arrested.

Please note, that the New Castle County Sheriff’s office is not a law enforcement agency; they do not have military ranks such as sergeants or lieutenants, only deputies. More importantly, their deputies do not make arrests.

However, deputies from the New Castle County Sheriff’s Office from time to time do in fact contact members of the community, but not in this instance.  A good way to verify that the person you are talking to is in fact from the Sheriff’s office is to simply, end the call.  Then contact the Sheriff’s office at (302) 395-8450.

 Here are some additional points to remember:

Neither Deputies nor officers from the New Castle County Division of Police will ever request or take funds over the phone, any payments owed must be made in person to the respective court.

They will never contact the members of the community about missed jury duty or a missed court date.

The only way to alleviate a warrant is to appear at the issuing agency, or at the court. Also, when posting bail, even for a family member, you have to be present in order to post the bail.

Additionally,  if you receive a call from the New Castle County Division of Police non-emergency number, it is also a scam. The system we use is not able to call back on that line nor will it enable anyone else to call out.  The (302) 573-2800 number is fully functional for incoming calls only.
