NEW CASTLE COUNTY DIVISION OF POLICE WELCOMES FACILITY DOG WOMBAT

(New Castle, DE 19720) We are proud to announce the newest member of the division, Wombat, our new facility dog. Wombat was received through the nonprofit organization, Canine Companions for Independence. The organization enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships.

Wombat’s primary role will be to serve as a goodwill ambassador at community service events and meetings, and to help calm and comfort witnesses, crime victims and anyone who may otherwise be afraid, uncomfortable or nervous. During a two-week training program in Long Island, New York, Wombat was matched with facilitator, Master Corporal Adam Orndorff, who is currently assigned to our Community Services Unit. Master Corporal Orndorff has over 26 years of police service and previously worked as a Community Engagement Specialist. Master Corporal Orndorff is also a team leader on the Crisis Negotiation Team, a member of the Critical Incident Stress Management team and has advanced training in Crisis Intervention.

Today, the Community Services Unit officially introduced Wombat, who received his badge from Colonel Leonard. Wombat becomes NCCPD’s second facility dog, following in the pawprints of Nikko, who served from 2018 to 2025. Nikko—along with other facility dogs from across the state—stopped by headquarters to welcome Wombat and pass the torch. Wombat is already hitting the ground running with a full schedule, and we can’t wait for everyone to meet our newest four-legged team member!
