Traffic Stop Yields Firearm Arrest

New Castle County Police have arrested 26-year-old Z’kai Brooks for weapons related charges following a traffic stop in the City of Wilmington.

(Wilmington, Del. – 19805) On Friday (Feb 3) at about 10:30 p.m., County Police officers were on proactive patrol when they observed a silver Acura commit a traffic violation in the area of Lancaster Ave and S. Van Buren St.  Officers were able to stop the vehicle as it entered Interstate 95 and contacted the driver, Z’kai Brooks, as well as a passenger.  Officers detected the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.  Officers continued the investigation and conducted a search of the vehicle.

During the search, officers located a handgun with a loaded magazine concealed under an unoccupied child seat in the rear passenger compartment of the vehicle, a 12.5 inch machete concealed on the front passenger side floor board against the frame as well as marijuana.

The passenger was cited for marijuana possession.

Z’kai Brooks was charged with carrying a concealed firearm, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia and seatbelt violations. He was arraigned and committed to Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $13,252 cash-only bail.  He was further issued a no contact order with the community of Hedgeville (City of Wilmington).
