Social Media Helps Detectives Identify Theft Suspect

The New Castle County Police have arrested 24 year-old, Jonathan Cepeda-Rivas for a fraud investigation, after he was positively identified with help from citizens who used New Castle County Police Social Media Page.

(New Castle, Del.-19702) On June 2nd, New Castle County Police were dispatched to the 300 block of Park Ave for a fraud investigation. Police learned that a subject, later identified as Jonathan Cepeda-Rivas, was able to use the victim’s information to gain access to her wireless account and fraudulently order two cell phones. He then had the phones delivered to the  victim’s address, was able to remotely track the packages and knew when they would be delivered. Jonathan Cepeda-Rivas then responded to the address in attempt to retrieve the packages. The homeowner’s doorbell camera was able to capture his picture, which was uploaded to New Castle County’s social media page. Two anonymous tipsters were able to positively identify Jonathan Cepeda-Rivas and contacted detectives.

On Wednesday (July 19) Jonathan Cepeda-Rivas turned himself in to New Castle County Police headquarters.

A search warrant was obtained for Jonathan Cepeda-Riva’s residence which is located in the 100 block of  Buckson Dr. During the search of the residence, police located evidence implicating him in the theft.

Jonathan Cepeda-Riva’s was charged with felony attempted theft. He was arraigned and issued a $2,000.00 unsecured bond and no contact order with the victim.
