Every year members of the New Castle County Police Division of Police dedicate time to honor fallen hero, Lt. Joseph L. Szczerba, by volunteering a day of service. Joe was a great police officer, man, mentor and most importantly public servant. Because cancer, unfortunately, impacts far too many lives this year the division’s command staff found it appropriate to raise money to donate to the Helen F Graham Cancer Center and Research Institute to honor Joe. County Executive Matt Meyer said, “I commend New Castle County Police for honoring the memory of Lt. Szczerba and his legacy of selfless service by enlisting community participation in the Pink Patch Project.”
To coincide with breast cancer awareness month staff members designed and sold New Castle County Police Pink Patches. The Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and Research Institute was chosen as the beneficiary of the fundraising effort as they are a local facility serving our community and are driven to be at the forefront of cancer treatment and research. Colonel Vaugh Bond stated “As a community policing agency we feel it was only appropriate for our agency to get involved in bringing awareness to this issue. In addition, we sought to raise money that will be donated to further cancer research so that cancer will one day be eradicated. We thank everyone who supported our efforts by purchasing the Pink New Castle County Police patches.”
Since the beginning of October, approximately 700 patches have been purchased by the employees that work in New Castle County Government.
The pink patches will be on sale for the public at New Castle County Police Headquarters, 3601 N. DuPont Hwy, on Wednesday, October 25th from 12 p.m.-7 p.m. They will be sold for $5.00 each and are limited to two patches per person. All proceeds from the sale of the patches will be donated to the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and Research Institute.
