(Newark, DE 19713) Yesterday morning, (July 15) at approximately 12:30 a.m., patrol officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to the unit block of Waltham Street, in the community of Kimberton Townhouses for a report of a carjacking. When the officers arrived, they learned that three female victims between the ages of 15-18 were visiting friends in the area when they were approached by a black male wearing all black. The victims were in a 2017 red Nissan Versa, which belonged to one of the victims. As the black male got close to the car, he pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the victims. He then ordered all the occupants out of the vehicle and drove off.
Yesterday afternoon the vehicle was located by other patrol officers of the New Castle County Division of Police in the area of Polk Drive and Rysing Drive in the community of Edgemoor Gardens, Wilmington, DE.
The patrol officers activated their emergency equipment and attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspect disregarded the emergency equipment and continued north on Edgemoor Road. The suspect then made his way to River Road east where the suspect attempted to ram another fully marked New Castle County Division of Police patrol vehicle. As the vehicle turned onto Philadelphia Pike, the patrol officers discontinued the pursuit for public safety reasons.
Later, the vehicle was involved in a property damage accident at East Holly Oak Road and Jill Court. The suspect fled from the vehicle at which point a foot pursuit was initiated. The suspect was eventually apprehended in the area of the Speedy Gas Station on Philadelphia Pike.
The suspect has been identified as 18-year-old, Mar-Ky Frederick of Wilmington. He was charged with: one count of felony Reckless Endangering First Degree, one count of felony Receiving Stolen Property, one count of felony Resisting Arrest, one count of felony Disregarding a Police Officer Signal, and one count of misdemeanor Receiving Stolen Property. He was also charged with the following Traffic Offenses: Leaving the Scene of Property Damage Accident, Reckless Driving, Failure to Provide Information at Collision Scene Resulting in Property Damage, Driving Without a Valid License, Failure to Stop at A Red Light, Failure to Drive in the Proper Lane and in the Proper Direction, Unreasonable Speed, Speeding in Excess of 25mph in a Residential District and 15 counts of Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign.
He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 11 and subsequently held in lieu of $37,499 secured bail. Additional charges pertaining to the carjacking incident are forthcoming.
