(Newark, De 19711) Yesterday (Nov 30), at approximately 1:15 p.m. patrol officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to the intersection of Branch Rd and Doe Run Rd for the report of a motor vehicle crash. When the officers arrived, they saw that the crash involved a rollover and the 35-year-old driver had been ejected.
The driver was transported to a local area hospital via Delaware State Police Helicopter and investigators from the New Castle County Division of Police Traffic Services Unit arrived at the scene and assumed the investigation.
The investigation revealed that the vehicle, a 1998 Lexus sedan, was traveling north bound on Doe Run Road at a high rate of speed. In the area of Branch Rd, the driver lost control negotiating a curve and crossed into the southbound lane. The vehicle then continued off the roadway striking a Delmarva Power and Light (DPL) pole and a mailbox. The vehicle continued into the roadside grass and then hit a second DPL pole and neighborhood sign. This caused the vehicle to flip an undetermined number of times ejecting the driver. The vehicle came to a rest on its roof, but not before 5 poles, DPL and Verizon, was damaged along with a mailbox, and DELDOT sign.
At the time of this news release, the driver has been listed in stable condition. While the investigation is still in its early stages, the investigators have revealed that impairment does not appear to be a factor. Excessive speed appears to be the main factor. The driver was also not wearing a seatbelt.
