(Newark, DE 19713) Patrol Officers from the New Castle County Division of Police have charged a 14-year-old male in reference to multiple attempted vehicle thefts that occurred in Newark. On Monday, July 24, 2023, Officers responded to Glen Eagle Village Apartments in reference to three attempted vehicle thefts that occurred during the overnight hours. Officers on the scene discovered that the suspect smashed the vehicle windows and then used a tool to damage and manipulate the steering columns. The vehicle thefts were unsuccessful however, all three vehicles were left damaged. The vehicles were discovered to be two Hyundais and one Kia.
Officers continued to investigate the crimes and ultimately identified the suspect as a 14-year-old male from Newark. The suspect was later apprehended on July 26, 2023, by Patrol Officers from C-squad. During an interview, the suspect admitted he attempted to steal all three vehicles.
The juvenile was charged with:
3 felony counts of attempted theft of a motor vehicle.
3 misdemeanor counts of tampering with a motor vehicle.
3 misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief.
3 misdemeanor counts of breach of release.
He was arraigned by New Castle County Family Court and bail was set at $10,000.00 secured. He was later committed to the New Castle County Detention Center.
