FATAL CRASH INVESTIGATION ON INTERSTATE 95

(Wilmington, DE 19804) On Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at approximately 2:33 a.m., officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on I-95 southbound at the I-495 split involving a New Castle County Paramedic vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers learned that New Castle County Paramedics were traveling southbound on I-95 at the I-495 interchange when they attempted to respond to an unrelated accident on the left shoulder of the interstate. The paramedics activated the emergency lights on their fully marked 2024 Ford F-350 New Castle County Paramedic vehicle and began changing lanes to approach another accident on I-95 and provide any necessary medical assistance when a collision occurred with a 2013 Nissan Altima. The Altima was driven by 33-year-old Kierra West from Newark and accompanied by a six-year-old male passenger.

Following the collision, the paramedic vehicle came to rest in a lane on I-95 while the Nissan Altima stopped on the left shoulder. Responding officers and emergency medical services immediately provided medical care to everyone involved.

Tragically, Kierra West was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her six-year-old passenger was transported to Nemours Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver and passenger of the New Castle County Paramedic vehicle were taken to Christiana Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.

The New Castle County Division of Police Traffic Services Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident or who may have surveillance video to please contact Detective Maloney at 302-395-8055 or by e-mail at Kevin.Maloney@newcastlede.gov or by calling the New Castle County Division of Police non-emergency number at 302-573-2800.
