K9 Thor, a German Shepherd born in June 2014 in the Czech Republic, became part of the Division in October 2015. He served with dedication alongside his handler, Master Corporal Paul Smack, until his retirement in January 2024. During his career, Thor was credited with 40 apprehensions and over $430,000 in money seizures. After retiring, he enjoyed a peaceful life with M/Cpl. Smack at home until he passed away on May 1, 2025.
K9 Champ, a Belgian Malinois born in October 2013 in Belgium, began his service with the Division in September 2015. He was partnered with Master Corporal Mark Lutes throughout his career until his retirement in June 2022. Over the years, K9 Champ played a crucial role in numerous felony arrests and narcotic seizures. After retiring, he enjoyed his time at M/Cpl. Lutes’ home. Sadly, K9 Champ passed away peacefully on May 10, 2025.
Both K9s were loyal partners, and their contributions to the department and community will always be remembered. Our deepest condolences to M/Cpl. Smack, M/Cpl. Lutes and their families during this difficult time.
