BREAK-IN ATTEMPTS LEAD TO SUSPECT’S ARREST

(Newark, DE. 19702) On Saturday, December 13, 2025, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Norman Drive in the Eagle Trace Townhouses neighborhood in Newark for a reported burglary in progress. While responding to the call, Officers were informed that the suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Christopher Smith of Newark, had attempted to enter a residence through a rear sliding door. A physical description and clothing details were provided to responding Officers, who then arrived at the scene and located Christopher Smith on Norman Drive, where he was taken into custody

Officers later determined that Christopher Smith had attempted to break into two homes on Norman Drive by trying to force entry through sliding glass doors. During the attempts, he damaged screen doors, fences, and security cameras, and entered other victims’ fenced yards, causing further property damage.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Unit responded to the scene and took over the investigation.

Christopher Smith was transported to New Castle County Police Headquarters, where he was charged with the following offenses:

  • Two Felony Counts Attempted Burglary in the First Degree
  • Four Misdemeanor Counts of Criminal Mischief under $1,000
  • One Misdemeanor Count of Trespass in the Second Degree

Smith was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $40,500 cash bail.
