Corporal Paul John Sweeney – End of Watch Thursday, November 30, 1972
While on patrol during the late evening of October 20, 1972, Officer Paul Sweeney was traveling northbound on U.S. Route 202 in the vicinity of Independence Mall. Another vehicle struck the rear of Officer Sweeney’s police car resulting in extensive damage and a fire. Due to his injuries, Officer Sweeney died on November 30, 1972.
Corporal Sweeney had served with the New Castle County Division of Police for 4 years and was posthumously promoted to the rank of Corporal. In 2006 the Division’s new headquarters building was named in Corporal Sweeney’s honor. It is for Corporal Sweeney’s ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty that we pause to remember.
