THREE TEENS CHARGED WITH RECKLESS ENDANGERING IN NEW CASTLE

(New Castle, DE 19720) Detectives from the New Castle County Division of Police have charged three teens following an investigation into a shots fired incident that occurred in New Castle. On Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11:18 p.m., patrol officers were dispatched to a report of shots fired outside of the Holloway Terrace Fire Hall. While responding, a second call was made reporting that an occupied home near the scene had been struck by gunfire. Investigation on scene revealed that there was a birthday party wrapping up at the fire hall at which time a large group of uninvited individuals responded to the area. As people were leaving the party, the suspects entered a silver sedan. A suspect in the silver sedan then fired a gunshot towards a male suspect who was walking away. The shot missed the intended target and struck an occupied home traveling into the kitchen and striking an interior wall. The home was occupied by three victims at the time of the incident. The suspects then fled from the scene.

Through investigative measures, detectives were able to identify the suspect vehicle and all involved suspects. The suspects were identified as a 17-year-old male from Townsend, a 16-year-old male from Middletown, and a 17-year-old male from Townsend. All three suspects were later taken into custody with the assistance of the Special Investigations Squad and the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT). Detectives conducted multiple search warrants and located a 40 caliber handgun, a 9mm handgun with no serial number, and a third 9mm handgun.

All three suspects were charged with four felony counts of reckless endangering in the first degree, 1 felony count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, one felony count of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, and one felony count of conspiracy in the second degree. The suspects were arraigned by New Castle Family Court and committed to the New Castle County Detention Center on cash bail.

WARRANT SCAM WARNING

(New Castle, DE 19720) Over the last week, officers have handled additional reports of phone scams. During these scams, the suspects identified themselves as members of law enforcement and demanded the victim pay money for an outstanding criminal warrant. In the most recent scam, the suspect had the victim pay over $14,000 to a Coinflop FDIC Bitcoin kiosk. The suspect identified himself as NCCPD Sheriff Sgt Brian Collins and used a fake phone number to make the call.

Here are some red flags to help you identify potential scams and protect yourself:

  • Unsolicited Calls – Be cautious of unsolicited calls from someone claiming to be a police officer.
  • Pressure Tactics – Scammers often use high-pressure tactics, creating a sense of urgency. They may threaten arrest or claim that immediate payment is necessary.
  • Payment Methods – Be wary if you’re asked to make payments, especially through unconventional methods like gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.

If you suspect a scam, follow these steps to protect yourself:

  • Verify the Call – Hang up and independently verify the call by contacting the official phone number of your local police department. Do not use the number provided by the caller.
  • Consult Family – Speak with other family members to confirm the situation. Scammers often exploit emotions by claiming a loved one is in trouble.
  • Report to Authorities – If you determine it’s a scam, report the incident to your local police immediately. Help us track these criminals and protect others in our community.

Please remember that legitimate authorities will not demand payment through unconventional means like gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency. If you are ever in doubt, please contact the New Castle County Division of Police directly to verify the legitimacy of the situation at (302) 573-2800.
