Before you head out to celebrate, our Traffic Services Unit would like to share some sobering statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). We believe it’s vital for everyone to stay informed; your safety and the safety of others may depend on it.
Fourth of July Stats
In 2023, 617 people died in traffic crashes during the Fourth of July holiday period.
•38% (233) of those fatalities occurred in drunk driving crashes.
•Of those who died in drunk driving crashes, 27% were in a crash involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration at or above .15 g/dL – almost twice the legal limit in nearly every state.
From 2019 to 2023, there were 2,653 traffic crash fatalities during the Fourth of July holiday period.
•1,679 of those fatalities were the driver.
•38% (643) of those drivers were drunk.
•The 21-34 age group had the highest percentage (48%) of drunk drivers.
