5TH DUI ARREST AFTER WILMINGTON MAN’S TRUCK GETS STUCK IN SNOW, TIED TO HIT-AND-RUN

(Wilmington, DE 19808) Officers from the New Castle County Division of Police have arrested 66-year-old Michael Elwood of Wilmington in connection with his fifth DUI-related arrest.

On Friday, January 30, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m., Officers responded to the 5500 block of Limerick Circle in the Pike Creek Village Apartments for a report of a vehicle stuck on a snow-covered stairwell in a parking lot. Upon arrival, Officers observed a black Dodge Ram pickup truck positioned on top of a stairwell separating the upper and lower parking areas. The vehicle was lodged on top of a snowbank and stuck, with the driver, Michael Elwood, inside. While speaking with Elwood, Officers observed signs of intoxication, and after he refused to comply with commands, he was removed from the vehicle and taken into custody.

While Officers were investigating this incident, another Officer was investigating a hit-and-run in the 2400 block of East Eric Drive in Wilmington’s Maplecrest community, which occurred approximately one hour earlier. The investigation determined that a black Dodge Ram had struck another vehicle and fled the scene. Evidence later linked Elwood’s vehicle to the hit-and-run.

Michael Elwood was transported to New Castle County Police Headquarters, where he was charged with the following offenses:

  • One felony count of 5TH Offense after 4 prior offenses-DUI of Alcohol
  • One misdemeanor count of resisting arrest.
  • One misdemeanor count of leaving the scene of a property collision accident
  • One misdemeanor count of failure to provide information at a collision scene.
  • One misdemeanor count of failure to have insurance identification in possession.
  • One violation of inattentive driving

Michael Elwood was arraigned by the Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to pay $11,000.00 cash bail.
