(Newark, DE 19702) On Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at 10:37 p.m. Patrol Officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to Glasgow Park – Newark – in reference to a bomb threat. Information was provided by the Maryland State Police advising of the threat. During a separate investigation in Maryland, Troopers with the Maryland State Police received information that a suspect placed an unknown explosive device somewhere in the parkland.
New Castle County Patrol Officers immediately responded, determined that the park was empty, and established a security perimeter around Glasgow Park.
Out of an abundance of caution, the park remains closed to the public as officers conduct a complete and thorough search of the entire 250-acre property. The New Castle County Division of Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team and the K9 unit are assisting with conducting a grid search of the entire park.
Additional K9 teams from the Delaware State Police, Wilmington Police Department, University of Delaware Police Department, and the Delaware River and Bay Authority have responded to assist. The Delaware State Police Aviation Unit, New Castle County Emergency Medical Services, New Castle County Emergency Communications, Christiana Fire Company, Delaware City Fire Company, and the Newark Fire Department are also assisting with the investigation and scene security.
The Division understands Glasgow Park is a popular destination for county residents and we appreciate their patience as we work diligently to ensure their safety. The park will reopen as soon as it is deemed completely safe.
New Castle County Detectives are also collaborating with the Maryland State Police to fully investigate this serious incident.
